Helix Improvements Programme Starts
The Helix project has given the go ahead for work to start on a programme of path upgrades.
Public realm specialists Land Engineering have been contracted to carry out footpath improvement works in the Abbotshaugh woodland area near Bainsford and Langlees in Falkirk.
Local residents can look forward to improved path surfaces, the removal of weeds and vegetation, and improved drainage. This will improve the surroundings and make the paths easier and safer to use.
The initial paths contract is the first step in a programme of major improvements which will transform the Abbotshaugh woodland area.
It also represents the first physical activity on the Helix site which is set to be developed over the next three years into a high quality greenspace for Falkirk and Grangemouth.
The path works will take approximately eight weeks to complete and focus on two of the Abbotshaugh woodland’s major pathways. One path runs adjacent to the Bainsford Burn whilst the other runs alongside the River Carron.
Helix project manager Mike King commented: “Our paths improvement programme is the culmination of months of hard work by the local path users group, the communities bordering the Abbotshaugh woodland and our design consultant. It’s very satisfying to watch work in the northern Helix area finally get under way.”
Mike added: “Looking ahead, the first major construction activity on the Helix will take place later this summer when work starts on the creation of a new access road into the site.”
The £40 million Helix development will create a new, high quality greenspace for Falkirk and Grangemouth centred on landmark public art and an extension of the Forth & Clyde Canal. The project will transform 300 hectares of under-used land to provide:
• the Kelpies - two Landmark sculptures in the shape of horse’s heads
• a central park with a lagoon
• pathways and cycle networks
• a blend of new and existing woodland areas
• a new canal link connecting Grangemouth into Scotland’s canal network
• public artworks
• new allotments
The Helix is being driven by a partnership of Falkirk Council, British Waterways Scotland and Central Scotland Forest Trust through the Helix Trust.
The project has been awarded a £25 million grant from The Big Lottery Fund as part of its Living Landmarks Programme, while significant funding and land has also been committed by Falkirk Council and British Waterways Scotland.
